Meet Monica, Our Latest Thinking It Better recruit and an expert in the procurement field….

Tell Us About Your Professional Procurement Background

I am a MCIPS qualified Procurement professional with over 15yrs working in construction – predominantly in the railway sector.  Mel loves the fact that I studied Criminology at university, which is a fun subject – is it weird that I’m fascinated by the minds of criminals? I have a post graduate diploma in Construction Management which I completed in my late twenties, and moved from role as Change Manager at a Housing association to a Construction Consultancy where I worked toward RICS chartership.  I left in 2008 to join Network Rail where I made my way up the ranks managing teams of up to 20 commercial staff, procuring and managing multi-million pound route contracts.  I left NR in 2018 to work part time for a construction and railway plant operator, which allowed me to pursue my desire to ‘give back’ to society through volunteer mentoring with a women’s charity.  It is at this time that I started training as a coach.  I missed the regular contact and development of team members, this is where I found my daily joy!

Ever Had Any Surprising Roles In Your Career?

I was door security at various London / Essex nightclubs in my early years!  Apart from that, I volunteered with various NGO charities during a 12 month sabbatical.

What are you most looking forward to with joining Thinking it Better?

Being part of a team of like-minded individuals, and the opportunity to work with clients in supporting them to unlock potential through developing a different and more free mindset.

Who has inspired you in business?

Kofi Anan, Richard Branson and Oprah Winfrey

Any Advice For People Starting Out?

The Twirly Gang – Otto Overwhelm, Claire Confusion, Will Worry, Dustin Doubt.  Nothing is ever achieved when these guys are in town 😉.  I’ll often encourage clients to bring the negative voices in their head alive by giving them character names…life is too short for professionalism to be grey!
