Covid-19 Get Your Program Ready For The Re-start

A three step approach to your new beginning

BEFORE YOU READ THIS BLOG WRITE THE NAME OF ONE PROJECT YOU ARE INVOLVED WITH ON A PIECE OF PAPER. APPLY ALL THESE IDEAS TO THAT PROJECT. THIS WILL MEAN YOU WILL HAVE SOME PRACTICAL ACTIONS TO TAKE.

Our experience working in corporations, blue chip manufacturing, the Police, Royal Air Force and the public sector led us to evolve a way to keep projects on track through massive disruptions. It’s been tried and tested on a wide variety of production projects. We know it will help get programs back on track when current circumstances allow us all to rebuild our businesses. The three steps are common to all projects even your personal and family goals:

Step 1: Understand

Step 2: Simplify

Step 3: Act

Covid-19, the greatest disruptor or, time to think it better for the great re-start

Covid-19 is an example of an extreme project disruptor. We have been forced to rapidly adjust our plans. Timescales have been rewritten, or maybe not, because no-one knows when we will be able to recommence our normal lives. There is even a doubt over what normal will look like in the future.

This is the time to think about your project management

Thinking it Better time. How often have we bemoaned the fact we don’t have time to think? To often we are absorbed with reacting to events rather than thinking about how we can most effectively accomplish outcomes. Maybe this is the time you need to do this thinking. What can our project look like when it is re born? Is there a better way? We may of course be forced into a different way of working. Here is a massive opportunity. Let’s seize it.

Step 1 is to understand your project

What we mean by ‘understand’ is to fundamentally examine what is happening within your project, NOW. NOT what you think is happening, NOT what you perceive, or someone’s told you is going on, but what’s really happening?

Understand what’s happening to your project NOW.

Start by making your own list. Here are some prompts to help. Then, ask others in your team to add to the list. It’s interesting to see if they see thins the same as you. Let’s understand the current state.

1, What are the real issues facing your project brought about by this current disruption?

2. What are your actual challenges to your achieving the long-term program goals?

3. What are the desired outcomes? Are these what your market is going to need, or should you take this opportunity to change direction to focus on something potentially more productive?

4. Does everyone really understand their role?

5. What gaps exist in knowledge, process, skills, personnel, commitment from others, leadership support?

It’s time to think it better.

Understand what needs to happen to achieve your next program milestones

We might have had set a comprehensive range of requirements. Objectives will be in place. But right now, it seems like everything’s changed.

Everything? Of course not, it just seems that way.

It’s time now to go back and revisit all those near-term goals you want to achieve. What can we do? How should we set about the task given what we now know? What does success look like in four weeks, six weeks, 12 weeks, six months?

You need to identify and understand the gap between what’s happening right now and you achieving your next project milestone. Then you will be in a good position to plan how to get there.

If you are running any major project or program or method B. Or maybe you head up a transformation project for a business or a construction project. Whatever it is, right now we have a massive disruptor to our aspirations caused by Covid 19. We’ll show you how you can use three steps to ensure that you come out of this in a good state?

Right now, work to understand what is your current status?

Take this time for Thinking it Better.
