Director / Owner
Ian is the owner and founder of Thinkingitbetter Ltd, and is a passionate and highly engaging speaker.
Ian’s background is working in industrial and project environments for over 25 years, holding a range of senior roles including Head of Project and Programme Management for Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace; working to set up and develop the project management capability of a German owned SME; Interim Managing Directorship; modifying and subsequently managing operations facilities in low volume specialist vehicle production; Operations Management for a manufacturer of capital CNC equipment – and all of these in a range of different markets – subcontract sector, shoe making machinery, “off road” material handling vehicles, aerospace.
Ian has also served 10 years as a Special Police Constable and in that time received Chief Constables Commendations for contributions to training.
Over time Ian has developed a passion for helping others improve by looking at and understanding how we react to our circumstances. Ian works with people and teams to “think things better”. Ian focuses on ‘practical application’ of knowledge and helps individuals and teams develop their own strategies for success by helping them understand how they can develop the right ‘thinking’ and ‘habits’.
Ian delivers Keynotes and Behavioural Workshops for Project Leaders in the MSc in Project Management at the University of Manchester and the University of Warwick and has worked with Automotive, and Industrial Sector Clients to develop blended technical and behavioural development courses and interventions for improvement.
Ian also provides Exec and Personal coaching for clients in Industry and Sport and works with UK Athletics via Jog Derbyshire as a coach for getting people active and into running.
ThinkingitBetter has developed and delivers Integrated Project Team leader training and Product Development Transformation Support for Rolls-Royce Aerospace, and has designed and delivered a range of bespoke interventions for clients including ‘Go-Look-See Awareness’, ‘communications workshops’, ‘leading projects workshops’ to Project Leadership for Infrastructure Projects’ – all of which have received excellent feedback and results. Ian continues to provide innovative support for project leadership with his clients.
Ian is also a member of Michael Finnigans’ i2i – impossible to inevitable team – helping people and teams to be the best they can be by unlocking their potential – i2i have successfully worked with blue chip companies, education sector , elite sports people, and members of teamGB.
Head of Business Development
Jim brings a wealth of experience from various Project Management roles held during 11 years working for Rolls-Royce Plc to THINKINGitBETTER.
He has worked on projects to deliver new components and systems for Civil gas-turbine engines, as well as engine testing facility construction and Infrastructure projects, delivering a high level of performance throughout. Most recently he has lead the development and implementation of a combined Systems Engineering and Project Management approach to verify achievement of product requirements for the latest Rolls-Royce Trent engine.
He has gained recognition for his excellent team working and leadership skills and is deeply interested in the psychological behaviours and processes that drive personal effectiveness.
Jim is a keen cyclist and runner. He enjoys the camaraderie of group training rides and the personal challenge of solo events. He also enjoys traveling to experience other cultures, including a particular interest in Japanese culture.
Jim joined the Rolls-Royce graduate training scheme in 2004, following his Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, specialising in Aerospace at the University of Strathclyde and has since attained a post-graduate masters in Project & Programme Management at the University of Manchester.
Office Manager / Administration / Finance and Accounts
Jane has a wide and varied background – from being a Self Defence Instructor in the Police Service , to managing all administrative activities for the Youth Hostel Association in Derbyshire , and also running her own business in property management.
Jane looks after the smooth running of THINKINGitBETTER and also provides supplementary admin support where required for ‘complete solutions’ for some clients.

Site selection, business case, facility concept and layout for Rolls-Royce Seletar large aero engine assembly facility in Singapore.
Programme Executive for the design and implementation of Shop floor assembly build systems in Derby and Singapore. £15m+
Implementation of SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) into the Civil Aerospace business within Rolls-Royce plc. This was amongst the most complex SAP implementation worldwide in 2001.
General Manager responsible for the implementation of LEAN into Aero Engine Assembly
50% reduction in the Trent 500 assembly build lead time with the implementation of Lean flow-line
Transformation of the civil aerospace assembly business through the training of over 2000 team members via an in-house residential training programme

Charlie I Travers
Head of Creative Media
Charlie has an eye for creative detail and a talent to quickly absorb information. Charlie has delivered a number of media projects for clients and the local community all with very positive feedback.
He has designed, filmed edited and published a number of short films and ‘talking heads’ movies for current clients and also for social media – used as part of THINKINGitBETTER development courses and workshops and also to share the businesses capabilities.

Senior Lean Manufacturing Coach / Lean Leadership Cultural Change / Lean Facilities & Infrastructure
After excelling in all areas of his engineering apprenticeship, Rich has developed a thorough knowledge of Lean over the last 20 years. He has helped to coach Lean methodologies and transformed operations in both Manufacturing and non-Manufacturing industries. He started his career as an Engineer at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK Ltd, and has helped to implement lean tools and coach important lean leadership behaviours as a senior Lean consultant in world-leading organisations such as Rolls-Royce, Jaguar, Land Rover, Velux, Bombardier Transportation, Ford Chicago Stamping, Caterpillar, and London Taxis International. He has extensive knowledge of developing all-encompassing Lean Production Systems. Rich was also instrumental in the processes used to implement Lean into Rolls-Royce’s state of the art aero engine assembly and test operations in Singapore. He has also applied these principles to Rolls-Royce new facilities globally, ranging from an apprentice learning academy, to external engine test facilities, research establishments, and operational facilities. Rich holds a Batchelor of Engineers (Hons) Degree in Mechanical and Materials Engineering from Loughborough University and is a Chartered Engineer with the IMechE.

Allan spent 14 years as an Engineering Officer in the Royal Air Force. Since leaving he has fulfilled a number of Executive Business roles across a wide range of diverse industry sectors ( Defence , Aviation , United Nations , Oil and Gas, Infrastructure, Renewables). Allan is professionally qualified to manage programme and legal requirements in multi-jurisdictional programmes and projects.
Alan brings his wide range of experience of both the ‘legal’ and ‘practical’ to the THINKINGitBETTER team.
Operations Management / Leadership
/ Aerospace Business Development
Rob has 35 years of experience in the Aerospace and Aviation industry with a track record of performance in Aero Engine Assembly and Test at Rolls-Royce Plc and in Business Development for HYDRO Systems UK Limited. Rob’s career progression to senior management and executive level has seen him gain valuable international experience having lead operations in the UK, Germany and Canada. Rob was the build team leader for the facility start up of Rolls-Royce’s engine assembly and test operations in Berlin from 1994 through 1996. He also held a senior management position as director for engine assembly and test in Rolls-Royce’s Energy division in Montreal Canada. Rob was General Manager of the Rolls-Royce Derby based Engine Assembly and Test operation before using his experience gained to establish the assembly production systems now deployed in Rolls-Royce’s state of the art aero engine assembly and test facility in Singapore. Rob holds a Diploma in Industrial Management from the University of Derby and an MBA from the University of Warwick.
Quality Management / Programme Management
Paul started his career in Rolls-Royce as a control systems engineer. He then moved to business improvement during the major improvement programme deployments in Rolls-Royce of the late nineties. Paul delivered a number of key improvement programmes for the RB211 and Trent project teams. As his career developed Paul delivered a significant programme for the product change process in the Civil Aerospace sector before moving to the engine build quality team to drive problem solving. Paul later moved into the manufacturing businesses to drive the new Rolls-Royce Process Excellence programme. Having succeeded in this role, he moved into a demanding senior Quality role in the Turbines business and became a lead Problem Solver as well as delivering the key business quality objectives. Paul then decided to start his own business to drive quality and improvement into the supply chains and beyond to use his skills and experience to help business increase their profits. Paul’s passion for programme management in improvement is what brought him to work with THINKINGitBETTER, where better?
People Development / Project and Programme Management
Helen has over 23 years’ experience in project and programme management (PPM) and 12 years in Retail Operations, originating in the Financial Services sector.
She has held a variety of roles from bank management to leading projects, running PMOs, managing teams and managing a large professional resource pool. She now works with organisations to improve their PPM practices, corporate capability and their PM professionals, using her extensive experience and knowledge of good practice. She is a skilled facilitator and regularly runs workshops, Master-classes and conferences for clients in all market sectors
Helen was a senior project manager for Abbey plc, running a wide range of IT, business transformation and change projects across the Group, including the set up and management of programme offices. She specialised in all aspects of resource management and soft skills such as communications and stakeholder management.
As Resource Manager for the Abbey Group PM function, Helen had responsibility for the recruitment, development, assignment allocation and career progression for a pool of 250 project professionals. It was in this role that Helen nurtured and developed her ‘People’ specialism, which has become the focus of her career today.
In 2006, Helen joined Human Systems as an Associate and later became Director of Business Development. Human Systems specialises in the assessment and benchmarking of Project, Programme and Portfolio Management capability, focussing on effective process, practice, people and teams. In this role she leads a wide range of major assignments for blue-chip clients across all market sectors.
Helen has now joined THINKINGitBETTER as an Associate, bringing her wealth of knowledge and experience in the ‘People’ aspects of business delivery to the team.
Tim Limberger MAPM
Project, Programme and Portfolio Management / Operations Management / Quality & Improvements
Tim’s enthusiasm for project management is supported by technical and business experience acquired across a wide range of demanding roles in Engineering, IT and Operations. He started his career in the automotive sector: first in HGV suspension development followed by over 7 years in engine development at Rover Group, where he was instrumental in the on-going development and optimisation of the K-Series engine range. Then from 1997 Tim worked at Rolls-Royce plc in a number of roles where he further developed his passion for project delivery and business improvement: whilst responsible for the final verification “pass-off” test process of all new and overhauled engines delivered from RR Derby, he also implemented SPC (Statistical Process Control), root cause analysis and process excellence into the test processes. Tim also implemented a highly effective global PMO into the RR corporate analytical software department and was chosen to deliver the engineering capability as part of the £1B sale of the Energy Business to Siemens.
Tim is a Member of the APM, the IMechE and a Chartered Engineer and has always supported the development of others in project management and engineering.
